Flaxseed oil, a precious source of essential fatty acids
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil is a natural ally in maintaining the body's inflammatory balance. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, vital for health as the body cannot produce them on its own; therefore, they must be obtained through diet.
Omega-6 (linoleic acid) transforms into arachidonic acid, contributing to the initiation of the inflammatory process, a necessary response for the body's defense. Meanwhile, omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) gives rise to EPA and DHA, with anti-inflammatory properties, which work to regulate and resolve inflammation.
These fatty acids share the same enzymes for their metabolism (delta 5 and delta 6 desaturase), however, the body prioritizes the conversion of omega-6, thus limiting that of omega-3. A good ratio between these two fatty acids is essential for optimal balance, with the ideal ratio being 1 omega-3 to 5 omega-6.
With its high omega-3 content (55%), flaxseed oil helps rebalance this ratio, often disrupted by a diet too rich in omega-6.
